The 1912 Heart Locket
"This is truly such a special piece. In between the seed pearls are interlocking diamonds. It is such a subtle detail, but the impact is huge, it adds depth and sparkle. She is also engraved with 1912, an incredible way to honour someone you love."
— Megan, founder & curator
In 1912 the diamond engagement ring was still decades from becoming the default, and a heart covered in pearls was how you said something serious. The whole face of this one is paved in seed pearls with diamonds set into the gaps between them, small enough that you notice them a moment after the pearls, and the back is plain domed gold with 1912 cut into it.
The nine karat is the English tell. Britain only legalised it in 1854, to put gold within reach of people who could not buy at 18, and the best English sentimental work of the period is full of it. She opens, so whoever was given her kept something inside.
*There is a small chip in the gold on the back, visible in the photos, from a long and well-loved life.
